- Far from raising "serious questions of practicality, if not
- constitutionality," my proposal to get drug dealers out of
- public- housing (NATION, May 1) would waive burdensome and
- time-consuming HUD lease and grievance procedures. It would
- reduce, sometimes by up to a year, the time it takes to evict
- drug pushers in communities where state laws fully safeguard the
- due-process rights for innocent residents. Ironically, this
- aspect of my plan, most widely acclaimed by public-housing
- residents and authorities, is also the one most decried by the
- legal-aid community.
